Invertek Drives, a leader in the design and manufacture of variable frequency drives (VFDs), partnered with Applied Automation to deliver structured servicing and optimisation for its fleet of Universal Robots (UR) UR5 collaborative robots.

Deployed at Invertek’s global manufacturing facility in Welshpool, the UR5 cobots automate and streamline testing of Optidrive VFDs, removing the need for operators to enter test zones and improving both throughput and safety. With a custom end‑of‑arm tool — including a Cognex vision system, fan‑speed sensor, and robotic “finger” — the cobots perform detailed functional and visual checks across up to 15,000 product variants, operating on 16‑hour shifts.

Service Partnership

To maintain maximum performance, Invertek selected Applied Automation as its dedicated UR service partner. The programme combines planned preventive maintenance, rapid response, and continuous optimisation tailored for high‑duty cobots in demanding production environments.

  • Preventive Maintenance: Mechanical/electrical health checks, firmware & URCap updates, and calibration of end‑of‑arm tools.
  • Safety & Compliance: Validation of protective stops, speed/force limits, and safety I/O in line with regulatory standards.
  • Performance Optimisation: Program tuning and changeover reduction to maximise throughput across variants.
  • Rapid Response Support: Priority troubleshooting with remote triage and on‑site engineering.
  • Documentation & Training: Service reports, asset registers, and on‑the‑job coaching for technicians.

“Our UR service plan with Applied Automation gives us stability. The robots run as expected, changes are controlled, and if we need help, we get it fast. It’s vital for ensuring smooth production across thousands of drive variations.”

— Peter Evans, Manufacturing Engineering Manager, Invertek Drives

“Applied Automation’s role is to protect Invertek’s productivity. Good service is about prevention, clarity, and leaving the line better than we found it.”

— Andy Haly, Technical Manager, Applied Automation

Scaling with Growth

As Invertek’s UR fleet expands, Applied Automation’s scalable model ensures each new cell is integrated seamlessly. Asset registers, consistent checklists, and centralised documentation make it straightforward to extend support while maintaining compliance and efficiency.
